Steps to Stories: Forest Lake Readers Walk to Local Library

A sunny fall morning provided the ideal setting for second graders at Forest Lake Elementary School in the Wantagh School District to continue a long-standing tradition. They made the mile walk to the Wantagh Public Library on Sept. 23 to learn about all the resources it has to offer.
Teacher Lori Gottlieb, with the help of several parents, accompanied the children past the Twin Lakes Preserve and to the building of many books. They got to explore their local public library, see the vast array of children’s books on the shelves and learn about the programs offered. Working with partners, they then went on a library scavenger hunt.
Librarians helped children sign up for the first library card if they didn’t have one yet, and all second graders got to check out a book to bring home. Ms. Gottlieb said the library visit emphasizes the importance of reading while also building community connections.
