To wrap up their third week of high school, ninth graders got to go outside and have some fun. Freshmen Field Day took place on Sept. 18 at Wantagh High School, a tradition that focuses on teamwork and aims to build bonds among classmates.

Students gathered in the gymnasium to find out their randomly assigned teams, then went out to the turf field to rotate through 10 different stations. Each had a competitive activity like the water balloon toss and hula hoop tic-tac-toe. In caterpillar feet, students had to work together to move across the field together with their feet planted on long wooden skis. In pass the pole, they stood in a circle and had to move one spot to the left or right, with the goal of grabbing the pole held by the previous student before it hit the ground. Teams competed in the mug relay to be the first to fill up a bucket as they transported water across the field. After going through all the stations, the groups came together for musical chairs and tug-of-war. 

Freshmen field day was supported by upperclassmen from the Physical Education Leaders club, led by advisers Marisa Caccese and Deb DiBiase. They worked at each station to explain the rules to the freshmen and supervise the games.

“It was a great day for the upperclassmen to interact with the freshmen and show that they’re role models,” Ms. DiBiase said. “It helps form bonds within the school.”
