High School Guidance Counselor Tapped to Lead Department

The Wantagh School District didn’t have to look very far for its new director of guidance, appointing high school guidance counselor Christopher Nyberg to the position effective July 1. He is replacing Frank Muzio, who is retiring.
Mr. Nyberg is completing his 16th year in the district, all as a school counselor. Over those years, he has taken on numerous other responsibilities including high school graduation coordinator, student government advisor, eighth grade boys basketball coach, seventh grade girls basketball coach and seventh grade girls lacrosse coach.
As the director of guidance, he will oversee 10 guidance counselors – five at the high school, three at the middle school and two at the elementary level. The department is committed to supporting the health, well-being and academic success for all students districtwide.
Mr. Nyberg holds a bachelor's degree in business management from the University of Scranton, a master’s degree in school counseling from Hofstra University and his administrative certificate from the College of Saint Rose.
“Wantagh has been my home throughout my entire career in education, so stepping into the role of director of guidance is especially meaningful,” he said. “I’ve had the privilege of working with so many incredible students, families and colleagues over the years and I’m excited to continue that work in a broader capacity. I’m grateful for the trust and support of this school community, and I look forward to building on the strong support systems already in place to help every student reach their full potential.”
Superintendent John McNamara announced Mr. Nyberg’s appointment at the May Board of Education and noted the wealth of experience he will bring to the role.
“His deep understanding of student needs, combined with his extensive experience in college and career readiness, makes him an ideal leader for the district's comprehensive guidance program,” Mr. McNamara said. “His extensive background in student support, program development and leadership within the Wantagh School District will be invaluable in ensuring that all students, from kindergarten through 12th grade, receive the guidance and resources necessary to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.”
