AI-Generated Lyrics Reinforce Lessons for Forest Lake Fifth Graders
An artificial intelligence program that generates songs about any topic is engaging students at Forest Lake Elementary School. Fifth graders in Nicole Silvar’s class are using Suno, a free AI music generator, which was provided to teachers from the district’s technology department.
Ms. Silvar’s students have made several songs that help them remember academic content. They can choose the genre and if it should be a male or female singer. Students are learning how to write detailed prompts and Suno then outputs two song options, typically 30 seconds to one minute long.
One song they recently created through Suno was on PEMDAS – parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction – to help them remember the order of operations in math. Other topics they have turned into songs include solids, liquids and gases for science, and early people of the Western Hemisphere in social studies. They’ve even made a few songs about fun memories in class.
Suno is available through Ms. Silvar’s teacher resources, so she is able to download any song that is created and share it with her fifth graders. She will typically play it a few times for the class to sing along, with catchy lyrics helping them memorize the content.
