Celebrating Words, Wisdom, and New Beginnings

2025 National English Honor Society Induction at Wantagh High School
On the morning of April 24th, the Wantagh High School Library transformed into a space of literary celebration as 69 new members were inducted into the Wantagh chapter of the National English Honor Society (NEHS). Surrounded by support from family members, faculty, school administrators, and board members, students were recognized for their academic achievements and their passion for English Language Arts.
The evening began with a warm welcome from NEHS President, Emma Colaco, who set the tone for a ceremony filled with inspiration and reflection.
Vice President Elizabeth Kirchner took the podium to express heartfelt gratitude to chapter advisor Mrs. Lopera, whose dedication and leadership have helped grow the chapter and provide meaningful opportunities for students. Elizabeth reminded the audience that English Language Arts is not only about reading and writing but also about creating positive impacts within our school and community. She shared her favorite quote by Oscar Wilde:
“Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember that from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught.” This quote, she explained, inspires her to seek knowledge through action and experience, not just in the classroom.
President Emma Colaco returned to the microphone to reflect on the profound ways the English language shapes our lives. She spoke of the magic in reading stories like Percy Jackson, the empathy sparked by hearing someone else's truth, and the joy that comes from a well-timed pun.
“Every word texted and song lyric that punches your gut with its reliability... the English language fulfills our lives and helps us to interact and communicate with every part of the world around us,” Emma said.
The induction of the new members was led by Cate Russo (Historian), Hailey O’Brien (Activities Chair), and Abby Ardelean (Public Relations Chair), followed by a certificate and flower presentation for each inductee.
Senior Sabrina Albano closed the ceremony by administering the official NEHS oath, officially welcoming the new members into a community that values scholarship, creativity, and the enduring power of words.
Congratulations to all 69 new members on this incredible honor. Your voices, your stories, and your commitment to English Language Arts will no doubt continue to shape our school and the world beyond.
