Next Generation of Musicians Meet the Instruments at Wantagh Elementary

Wantagh’s musicians of the future got a look at their instrumental options during a pair of recruitment assemblies on May 14 at Wantagh Elementary School.
Orchestra teacher Darren Sobol introduced more than 90 second graders to the four string instruments – violin, viola, cello and bass – that they can begin playing as third graders. He explained the different sounds they make and played a few chords on each. Students would have regular, small-group lessons with Mr. Sobol throughout the year, then morning ensemble rehearsals beginning in January to prepare for their year-end concert.
This year, about three-quarters of current third grade students are in the orchestra. Students are encouraged to join the orchestra, even if they plan to switch over to band in fourth grade, because of the skills they develop, such as the ability to read music.
A recruitment assembly for third grades followed, in which Mr. Sobol reviewed the four string instruments and band teacher Jack Schiefer talked about the brass, woodwind and percussion options. He was joined by fifth graders, who played the different instruments and showed just how far they have come in two years.
The second and third grade students received sheets to mark of their instrumental top choices. Wantagh’s elementary students are also able to join the chorus beginning in third grade, which they can do in addition to playing an instrument.
