Wantagh Preservation Society Shares Community History with Seventh Graders
This past week, seventh graders in Mrs. Turcinovic’s and Mr. Cippoletti’s social studies classes had a guest speaker from the Wantagh Preservation Society, who delivered an engaging presentation on the rich history of Wantagh. Students were fascinated to learn that many local buildings date back to the late 1700s and that Wantagh was once known as the town of Jerusalem. They also discovered that the name “Wantagh” comes from a Native American chief and that our town boasts the most historical landmarks of any community in the Town of Hempstead.
One fact that especially surprised students: Richard Nixon’s famous dog, Checkers, is buried in the pet cemetery located right across from the middle school.
During the visit, students examined primary source documents from the 1800s, giving them an authentic glimpse into Wantagh’s past. This experience will serve as a launchpad for their upcoming research project on the history of their hometown.
It was a fantastic and memorable visit—students were curious, engaged, and excited to learn more about their community.
