Fifth graders at Wantagh Elementary School are thinking like inventors. That’s because they are. They were recently tasked with taking simple, everyday problems and coming up with solutions to make life a little easier. Some of their inventions included a super caddy, school supply catcher and cookie dunker.
The inventions unit in STEAM class spanned several weeks as students followed a multiple-step process. Working in groups, they first identified problems, then brainstormed potential solutions, sketched out blueprints and built prototypes using recycled materials. They even worked on their marketing skills by creating commercials for their exciting new products, dabbling in green-screen technology.
