Forest Lake 5th Graders Advance to the Next Level
Family and friends gathered in the Wantagh High School auditorium for the Forest Lake Elementary School 5th Grade Moving Up Ceremony on June 25, eagerly awaiting the moment their fifth grader would make their way to the stage and take their well-earned place in the spotlight.
In Mr. Burke fashion, he began his address by asking students and guests to name the summer’s hottest movies using a few trivia questions. In his final trivia question where “Gravity” from Wicked was the answer, Mr. Burke said, “I encourage you to defy gravity as you enter middle school in the fall, never let anyone hold you down, and to follow any path you choose because your future is unlimited.”
As his speech came to a close, each student was given a cookie from the PTA, and a mirror from Mr. Burke which were placed under each student’s seat. As they looked at themselves in their mirrors, Mr. Burke emphasized the importance of looking at yourself and to reflect. “You’re the ones who can make a difference and to change things for good.”
Next, Mrs. Alessi motioned for the students to take their places on the risers to perform a touching rendition of “A Million Dreams” by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Their voices sang of the hopes and possibilities of the future. Once the final note faded, three students stepped forward to share heartfelt speeches, each one a beautiful reflection on their memories, friendships, and growth during their years at Forest Lake Elementary School.
Toni Mia Pagano remembered her first days as a kindergarten student sharing how she was scared at first but wanted to be a big girl by going into school alone. She also remembered having to spend first grade on her lap top at home during the pandemic, followed by 2nd grade quarantines several times after returning to school.
Natalie Sesnewicz remembers the big blue playground as a kindergartner and was so excited to play on it everyday at recess with her friends. “As a 5th grader, my favorite book was Home of the Brave which was both sad and interesting at the same time,” says Natalie. “Without Forest Lake, I would not have found all of my best friends and created so many memories.” The countless art projects in Ms. Capozio’s class and field trips were also Forest Lake highlight.
“Wow, I can’t believe I’m graduating from Forest Lake!” says Cameron Shapiro, the final speaker for the day. He too remembers walking into kindergarten with his big sister, and then spoke about wearing masks and sitting behind shields to speak to classmates in 2nd grade. “I will always remember that year because we were able to meet a lot of people and an amazing teacher. Everyday was a good day.”
As the ceremony concluded, Mr. Burke said, “It is my hope that Forest Lake changed you all for the better. The friendships and memories you have made are all for the better.”
Congratulations to the Forest Lake Elementary class of 2025!
