Students Celebrate Cultural Richness During World Language Week

Every year, World Language Week is celebrated in both Wantagh Middle School and Wantagh High School. During the week, foreign language students engage in a series of events which entail watching foreign films while noshing on delicious French crepes or Colombian obleas and other treats from different countries, poster contests, games, and the induction ceremony into the World Language Honor Society ceremony. 

On Wednesday, March 6, there were 56 high school students and 72 middle students inducted into the National World Language Honor Society under the advisory of Cara Wolf. During each ceremony, one by one the students were called forth to receive their certificates of induction which recognizes the high achievement of students and the significance of this milestone in their academic journey.

Students were entered into a raffle when a teacher overheard them speaking a foreign language in the hallway. This year’s winner was 9^th grader Brody Meyers who was announced in the Zen Den during Ms. Vargas-Curatola’s French class where they watched a French film and making dessert filled crepes.

Spanish students Gavyn Scherr and Harjaspreet Singh, and French student Cara Conseglia, all freshmen, were named the poster contest winners where students were asked to submit creative and accurate interpretations of the World Language Week Theme: Languages – A Unique Ingredient in Learning.

Although World Language Week is celebrated March 4 – 8, students in Spanish 2H and French 2R/2H will finish out the month creating recipes in Spanish and share the culture of the country of origin. French students will create a cooking show video by recording themselves preparing a recipe as their quarterly project.
