Mandalay Students Dive Into Empire State’s Diverse Regions
Traveling in New York State? Just ask a fourth grader at Mandalay Elementary School for some recommendations.
As part of their social studies curriculum, students are learning about the geography of the Empire State and they recently completed research projects focusing on New York’s different regions. Each fourth grader selected one area to study, including Long Island, New York City, the Adirondacks, the Capital Region, Catskills, Central New York, Finger Lakes and Western New York.
They used online sources and old-fashioned textbooks to do their research. Students pretended they were travel agents and had to create digital brochures for their respective regions. They included information such as the region’s landforms, water bodies, historical sites and culture, as well as fun facts.
Parents were invited to a travel fair on Nov. 13 in which students showcased their Google Slides presentations. Teachers Ashley Favata and Nicole Romagnuolo said this was the fourth year students have done the travel brochure project, which helps them develop research skills and broadens their horizons.
“They learn that New York is much more than just Long Island,” Ms. Romagnuolo said. “New York has mountains and not just beaches. It has so much to offer.”
