Wantagh Elementary Fifth Grade Artists Leave Their Mark

Like many classes before them, fifth graders at Wantagh Elementary School are making their mark in the school to keep their legacy alive for decades. They recently began work on the annual mural, inspired by the popular Peter Reynolds book, “The Dot.”
The project is being spearheaded by art teacher Taylor Potish, and each of the school’s 124 fifth graders will contribute a section by the time it is completed in the spring. The large dot in a first-floor hallway consists of several rings, alternating warm and cool colors. Each ring is divided into several bricks, with one for every student to personalize. Above the artwork is a quote from “The Dot” author Peter H. Reynolds, “Just make a mark and see where it takes you.”
Ms. Potish brings out a cart with paint and brushes, and invites a few students down at a time to complete their bricks. The work began in September and will continue for several months until each fifth grader has contributed and finishing touches are added. When complete, it will complement the other fifth grade murals that have been created annually over many years.
