1660 Vine Writer Jackson Prince Shares Performance Tips with Student Actors

Last week, the Wantagh High School cast of 1660 Vine enjoyed a mini master class in stage performance by Jackson Prince, book writer/songwriter of the musical, during their rehearsal. This unique opportunity to hear firsthand about the creative process behind this fresh, dynamic musical about social-media influencers, identity and authenticity with one of the writers was an honor to have as young performers.
During preparation for the show, Dr. Kimberly Davis, Drama Director, connected with Prince last summer when he mentioned that he would be traveling to the east coast to do some work for his nonprofit around the same time as the students were rehearsing for the show.
"Jackson Prince was incredibly generous with his time, staying late to answer questions and share stories,” says Dr. Davis. For our students interested in playwriting and composing, meeting him made the creative process feel real and within reach."
Listening and watching intently, Prince brought out the best in each performer regardless of which role they played. “Body language matters even when you’re looking at your phone,” said Prince. “Use your phone as a prop, interact with it and tighten the muscles in your face and body. It makes a huge difference and it will connect what the main characters are doing during the performance. Find the position. Find the face. Find the intensity. It will look normal on stage.”
