Firefighters Teach Safety at Wantagh Elementary
Wantagh Elementary School students brought home some valuable knowledge on Oct. 17 to keep themselves safe in their homes. Members of the Wantagh Fire Department visited the school for their annual Fire Prevention Month presentation.
During a pair of assemblies, for grades K-2 and 3-5, firefighters shared valuable information such as the importance of having an escape plan, regularly changing the batteries in smoke detectors, and keeping bedroom doors closed at night. Principal Dr. Randee Bonagura encouraged students to go home and have conversation with their parents to ensure they have these valuable safety measures in place and are prepared in the event of an emergency.
Fourth and fifth graders then went outside and visited the fire safety trailer, also known as the smokehouse. Students went inside in small groups for an emergency escape simulation. As the room filled with fake smoke, each child had to get out of bed when the smoke alarm sounded, crawl to the door, feel to see if it was hot, then head to a window where they were led to safety by a firefighter.
