In Short Measure, Forest Lake Students Boost Math Skills

A measuring unit had a personal touch in second grade classrooms at Forest Lake Elementary School. Students created miniature paper versions of themselves during a hands-on project to support the math lesson.
As part of the unit, they have been working with inches and feet, and exploring different tools such as rulers, tape measures and yard sticks. They measured the length of various objects around the room before capturing their own dimensions.
Students worked in pairs and took each other’s measurements using tape measures, including their height, arm length and circumference of their ankle, head, neck and waist. These dimensions were written on the shirt of their paper people. Second grade teachers said the goal was for students to put their math skills into action in a fun and creative way.
