Parent University

Parents and caregivers from the Wantagh community were invited to Parent University to learn tips to help make parenting a little easier. The event took place at Mandalay Elementary School where a variety of 45-minute informative sessions offered topics such as healthy screen habits, setting appropriate boundaries, nurturing grit in kids, middle school success, understanding school avoidance, executive function, first aid and more.

“We were thrilled to see that so many members of our community made it a priority to attend this event and were able to walk away with new insights and strategies to implement at home with their children”, said Donna Shulman who is a guidance counselor at Mandalay and Forest Lake schools. “Our ultimate goal is to is to provide all of our students with tools for success and we truly feel that our partnership with families is the first step in achieving just that.”

Those in attendance were fully engaged in each presentation. “Third grade teacher Nicole Romgnuolo said, “We are grateful for the presenters who took the time to create workshops and share their expertise.”

Dr. Rose Taveras and Caroline Rudin facilitated the Hold onto your Kid: Setting Appropriate Boundaries and Maintaining Healthy Relationships workshop where they encouraged parents to focus on the positive and acknowledge the student’s strengths and not the negative.

Parent feedback: "Wonderful presentations and excellent information. I would love if Wantagh had more of these nights. Very helpful and informative. Also, so nice to know you’re not alone."

"Both of the workshops I attended were great. The presenters did a wonderful job touching on many aspects related to the topic. I left with many key take aways that I will be trying to implement at home."
