Fifth-grade students in Robyn Hohenberg’s class at Forest Lake celebrated a special moment in their lives with peers, central administration and Director of English Language Arts Nicole Waldbauer by sharing their memoir writing during a recent publishing party.
For two months, the students joined fifth-graders districtwide in the Teachers College Writing Workshop activity, which relayed the notion that memoir writing has a strong reflective component. Students chose their topic based on interest and included dialogue, lively leads, strong endings and use of the five senses. During the course of the writing lesson, students revised and edited their versions several times.
During the school year, students will also be learning how to write a biography and opinion piece, Ms. Hohenberg noted. Through the Writers Workshop program, students are not only developing lifelong writing skills, but are learning to take ownership of their own writing process.
Through a commitment to educational excellence in a secure, supportive environment, the Wantagh Public Schools shall inspire students to develop a strong sense of individual worth and respect for others, to become lifelong learners and independent thinkers, and to fulfill themselves as concerned citizens in a diverse world.
