Fifth-grade students in Traci Weiss’ class at Wantagh Elementary School tied in an instructional unit on oceanography to the study of photosynthesis onboard the Captree fleet’s Yankee III.
The students learned how photo plankton creates most of the oxygen human’s breath and made their own nets to fish for plankton in the water. They also examined plankton under a microscope, visited the wheelhouse to see the navigational equipment and learned about and touched marine organisms that were dredged from the bottom of the bay.
