Seventh-grade students in Kim Davis’ English language arts class at the middle school have a deeper understanding of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” The students have been acting out scenes of this beloved holiday favorite as part of a study on the genre of drama.

“Acting out ‘A Christmas Carol’ makes Dickens more approachable for students,” Ms. Davis explained. “The students also learned about stage direction, monologue and dialogue and how the different elements of a drama interact.”

The students were responsible for preparing everything that each scene requires, including limited props and sound effects downloaded from their Chromebooks. As they acted out the scenes, they noted new vocabulary and nuances in the way words are phrased and discussed the author’s intended message.
