Helen Yao, an eighth-grade student at Wantagh Middle School, was a top 10 winner in the Long Island Design-A-Card Contest, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Her design will be made into notecards to raise scholarship money for the Judy Abrams/Margaret Fernandez National Examinations Scholarship Fund.
Additionally, Sarah Amadio and Christina Patmanidis were competition quarter finalists, while Nicholas Aldino, Anthony Anzalone, Savannah Barreira, Brooke Bellia, Arielle Combs, Alicia D’Costa, Julia Inayan, Kiera Udell and Tarika Varanasi received honorable mention awards. Participation awards were also distributed to Jessica Bohlert, Bryn Griffin, Caroline Wiffler and Jerry Wiffler.
The contest drew hundreds of entries from public and parochial school districts and entries were judged on originality and uniqueness of design, artistic quality and representation of Hispanic and Portuguese culture.
Through a commitment to educational excellence in a secure, supportive environment, the Wantagh Public Schools shall inspire students to develop a strong sense of individual worth and respect for others, to become lifelong learners and independent thinkers, and to fulfill themselves as concerned citizens in a diverse world.
