Wantagh Middle School students Emma Alexander (grade 8), Sean Hill-Hotz (grade 6) and Nora Toscano (grade 7) are school winners of the annual 2018 Memorial Day Writing Contest. Emma was invited to read her essay at American Legion Post 1273 after Wantagh’s Memorial Day parade and ceremony, held on May 28, and received a prize from Commander Sottnick.
Second-place winners also included Kayla Newbert (grade 6), Evan Thole (grade 7) and Jamie Watstein (grade 8). In addition, Madison Foster (grade 7), Jacqueline Mundy (grade 6) and Kelly Naus (grade 8) placed third in the contest. This is the second time that Evan has submitted a winning essay; he placed first while enrolled in sixth grade.
During the contest, the students were required to write an essay that completes the thought, “On Memorial Day, I will……..” The three top essays were chosen from each class, and each winner will receive a certificate from the English department. All of the winners have been invited to march in the Memorial Day parade.
