LOCK STARS

Forest Lake fifth graders have been immersed in coding activities and took their newly acquired skills to a higher level through participation in a digital and physical version of Breakout EDU.

Breakout EDU is an immersive learning game platform that brings the components of an escape room to the classroom. Students must work as teams to solve clues in order to open a series of locks and “break out.” The popular educational game equips students with 21st century skills and empowers students with use of a digital platform.

Through use of the digital version, students used their Chromebooks to decode binary clues and created code to navigate their escape. Much like the digital version, students decoded binary messages and performed binary math to physically open a series of locks with the correct combinations.

STEAM teacher Kaitlin Humphrey told the students they should be proud of their ability to break out. “You thought critically, worked as a team and completed a task, which was today’s goal.”
