The Wantagh High School art department is pleased to announce that 17 students, under the direction of teachers Jacqueline Gallo and Danielle Macumber, have received 19 regional awards in the 2019 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards contest, presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers is a nonprofit organization that identifies exceptional artistic and literary talent of students. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition, dating as far back as 1923, encourages students in grades 7-12 to submit works in 27 categories, including photography, painting, mixed media, drawing and illustration and more. At Wantagh High School, all Advanced Placement Art students are required to submit works for judication.

Students Alyssa Albanese (photography, “Thumbtacks”), Erika Meagher (photography, “Teardrop”) and Angelina Torre (photography, “Clementines”) were selected as Gold Key winners, and their works will be further considered for national recognition.

Silver Key winners include Isabella DelaCruz (photography), Catherine Desiderio (photography), Hannah Eschmann (photography), Megan Lucy (photography), Grace Riddle (photography), Hayley Vecchio (photography) and Helen Yao (painting). In addition, Athena Yao received two silver key awards for painting and one for drawing and illustration.

Student-artists who received honorable mention awards include Debbie Boudouris (photography), Katarina King (mixed media), John Leahy (drawing and illustration), Miranda Maldonado (photography), Kaitlyn Quigley (mixed media) and Megan Wojcik (photography).

The district congratulates talented artists on this outstanding accomplishment.
