Wantagh Warrior reporter Jessica Nealon and news editor Jillian Laino garnered a coveted a second place for best photograph and an honorable mention for best sports story, respectively, during Adelphi University’s Press Day journalism contest, held on Feb. 6. Jessica and Jillian join a host of high school student-journalists for the 15th consecutive year who have received Quill Awards for their reporting talents, adviser Peter Kravitz said.
Jessica received the Quill Award for a photo taken of a boy protesting for immigrant rights in a recent march in Manhattan. Jillian received the Quill Award for her sports column about the girls volleyball team. Jillian, the team captain, wrote about the team winning the state tournament. She was also voted most valuable player.
During the annual Press Day event, students attended lectures by renowned writers about important issues facing contemporary journalists. Students from Nassau and Suffolk counties, as well as New York City, attended the event.
