GEOGRAPHY WHIZ

Michael Michitsch, a seventh-grade student at the middle school, is the winner in the school-level competition for the National Geographic Bee. He will now take a test for a chance to participate in the state finals. Eighth-grader Evan Thole placed second and seventh-grader Heather Sheridan placed third.

The National Geography Bee reviews and tests students’ knowledge of world geography and is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography.

Prior to the holiday break, preliminary rounds were conducted in all classes, and 26 students in grades 6-8 qualified to compete in the schoolwide finals on Jan. 10. Under the direction of social studies teacher David Cippoletti and District Supervisor of Social Studies Christopher Widmann, competitors were tested in a challenging contest on their knowledge of U. S. cities, historic places, continents and U.S. and world geography.

The district congratulates Michael on this academic achievement and wishes him the best of luck in his advancement in the competition.
