In addition to the bell that starts the school day, the sound of a train whistle called for Wantagh Elementary School kindergarten students to take a proverbial ride on the Polar Express. Polar Express Day relates to Chris Van Allsburg’s popular tale “The Polar Express” about an old-fashioned steam train that takes children to the North Pole for Santa’s departure. Like in the book, Principal Dr. Randee Bonagura and Assistant Principal Jessica Zimmer punched each student’s ticket as they collectively strolled through the halls with their teachers while dressed in snuggly pajamas.
The students settled down to literary and art activities, including the crafting of construction paper hot chocolate cups, a silver bell and trains, as well as sequencing and sentence structure exercises. The special activities culminated with a warm cup of hot chocolate and cookies to celebrate the holiday season.
Through a commitment to educational excellence in a secure, supportive environment, the Wantagh Public Schools shall inspire students to develop a strong sense of individual worth and respect for others, to become lifelong learners and independent thinkers, and to fulfill themselves as concerned citizens in a diverse world.
