The excitement was palpable as the District’s faculty and support staff greeted each other in the high school auditorium on Superintendent’s Conference Day on Aug. 29. Keeping with Wantagh tradition, the morning’s opening ceremony included members of the police department and emergency services, local and state representatives as well as community organization leaders, who were invited to attend the official opening of the 2018-2019 school year.
During his introductory remarks, Board of Education President Peter Mountanos paid tribute to former Science and Technology Education Director Kathleen Cahill, who passed away earlier this summer. He then noted that teachers contribute to the most important job in the world and that leadership’s job is to empower them.
“Push students to be the best versions of themselves,” Mountanos said. “We thank you, appreciate you and support you.”
Superintendent of Schools John C. McNamara, Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services Dr. Marc Ferris and Assistant Superintendent for Business Adriana Silver introduced new faculty and support staff. In speaking to the entire faculty, Dr. Ferris said, “Think about the impact you have on children.”
Prior to the teachers’ scheduled department meetings in their home schools, McNamara addressed the challenges that always accompany the educational field. “It is so important to focus on what we can control, the good work we do and the impact of that work on students,” he said. “Conjure up your inner optimism.”
Through a commitment to educational excellence in a secure, supportive environment, the Wantagh Public Schools shall inspire students to develop a strong sense of individual worth and respect for others, to become lifelong learners and independent thinkers, and to fulfill themselves as concerned citizens in a diverse world.
