    Wantagh History

Wantagh is named after an Indian grand sachem. The first Europeans settled in 1644. Rail service to Manhattan began in the 1880's. The original station, restored to how it looked in 1904, is on display at the open-air Wantagh Museum on Wantagh Avenue. Hotels and resort fishermen came with the Sunrise Highway in 1929, the same year Jones Beach State Park opened.

Transforming suburban development began in the late 1940's and continued into the 1970's.
