Wantagh Warrior senior journalists garnered three Quill Awards at Adelphi University’s annual Press Day, held on Feb. 26. Co-Editor in Chief Juliet Watstein won third place in the best arts review category, while Co-Editor in Chief Jenna Miller won an honorable mention in the most outstanding reporter category.
Members of Wantagh High School’s Science Olympiad teams garnered much success at the regional competition, held at Division Avenue High School in Levittown on Feb. 1. Team A placed fourth out of 23 competing teams from across Long Island and earned a spot at the state competition to be held on March 13-14. In addition, Team B members Anjelica Meagher and Amanda Ciarmella won a first-place medal in the Write It/Do It category.
Wantagh High School’s aspiring journalism students were among several hundred students who attended Hofstra University’s annual Press Day, held on Dec. 11. Journalism teacher Peter Kravitz and the students participated in an interesting seminar and panel discussion led by WABC-TV reporter N.J. Burkett, Hofstra journalism associate professor Kelly Fincham and Genetta Adams, managing editor of The Root.
The district is pleased to announce that seniors Jack Padula and Ryan Smith were selected as recipients of the Nassau Zone Award. Sponsored by the New York State Association for Health Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, the award recognizes one male and one female Nassau County high school senior from each school district who exemplifies outstanding scholastic ability, physical education performance and leadership qualities.
Under the direction of Peter Kravitz, Wantagh Warrior high school journalists garnered six individual awards during the annual Empire State Scholastic Press Association contest, held at Syracuse University. The district’s single gold award was received by current senior Nicole Hooker in the sports news category for an article she wrote on last year’s girls soccer team.
Wantagh High School’s National Honor Society inducted 70 new members during a traditional candlelighting ceremony, held in the auditorium on Dec. 3. The evening featured words of wisdom from administrators, musical interludes from the high school’s string chamber ensemble and the singing of the national anthem by Katriana Koppe.
talented cast and crew drew a full house during performances of Jonathan Larson’s “Rent School Edition,” held in the Wantagh High School auditorium on Nov. 21-23. Under the direction of Heather Naughton, choreographers Ellie Breen and Kim Davis and vocal director James E. Brown, the cast moved the audience with the two-act musical with original lyrics by Larson.
