Wantagh High School senior Athena Yao was named a $2,500 scholarship winner in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Athena was chosen among more than 15,000 talented finalists from each state, who were judged based on their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in future college and university studies.
Wantagh High School thespians Kyra Orgass and John Sileo have been nominated for the 2020 Roger Rees Awards for Best Actor and Best Actress for their performances in “Rent School Edition,” which was held under the direction of Heather Naughton on Nov. 21-23. John played the part of Roger Davis, an HIV positive songwriter and musician and boyfriend to Mimi, played by Kyra.
Bright blue skies and warm temperatures were the backdrop for an afternoon of revelry as Wantagh High School teachers lined the school’s driveway with their decorated cars to host a car parade for the Class of 2020, held on May 15. Everyone who attended practiced social distancing, but the spirit and joy of graduation season still resonated as each of the seniors passed through the tunnel of cars to the honk of horns and shouts of congratulations from faculty and administration.
Congratulations to KYRA ORGASS and JOHN SILEO for being nominated to the top 25 respective Best Actor and Best Actress Awards for their performances in “Rent.” In response to the global pandemic, the 2020 Roger Rees Awards for Best Actor and Best Actress were modified into an online program.
The Wantagh School District welcomes high school principal Dr. Paul M. Guzzone, effective July 1, 2020. Dr. Guzzone was appointed by the board of education and Superintendent of Schools John McNamara during the May 7 business meeting. He replaces current principal Carolyn Breivogel, who retires at the close of the school year.
Juliana Rose, a 10th grade student at Wantagh High School, is New York State’s first-place winner in the Daughters of the American Revolution 2019-2020 Christopher Columbus Essay Contest. The national contest is sponsored by the DAR and the National Italian American Foundation in honor of Christopher Columbus.
Wantagh Warrior senior journalists garnered three Quill Awards at Adelphi University’s annual Press Day, held on Feb. 26. Co-Editor in Chief Juliet Watstein won third place in the best arts review category, while Co-Editor in Chief Jenna Miller won an honorable mention in the most outstanding reporter category.
