Ø An average of 90 or better in ELA

    Ø No quarter grade lower than 90

    Ø Teacher recommendation

    Ø At or above grade level expectations on NYS and/or district approved  standardized assessments

    Ø Approval of the English Department Supervisor


      Teachers will base their recommendations on not only student grades on formative assessments, but also on the student's demonstration of these performance based skills. Potential honors students should demonstrate the following skills in the classroom:

    • Higher order critical thinking
    • Active, rather than passive, constructive class participation
    • Strong oral expression skills
    • Strong inquiry and research skills
    • Strong listening skills
    • Strong note-taking skills
    • Above-average writing skills
