Selection Criteria for Membership in the
Wantagh High School Chapter
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
The scholarship criterion for NHS at Wantagh High School is an unweighted, unrounded, 90 average or higher. Students who first meet this criteria after sophomore or junior year will receive a NHS application the following October. The application will require the student to document service, leadership, and character components. The Faculty Council of the NHS reviews the applications and will offer acceptance to qualified candidates. Students who are denied as juniors may reapply as seniors.
NHS is more than just academic recognition. The NHS chapter establishes guidelines for selection that are based upon a candidate’s outstanding performance in theare as of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These four criteria form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built.
Scholarship: Students applying to join the National Honor Society need to have and maintain a cumulative unweighted grade point average of 90 or higher. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character. Members who do not maintain the required average will be dismissed from the National Honor Society.
Service: This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit, but without compensation.
Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working for others. A leader is someone who, whether by words or example, raises the level of performance of those around him/her.
Character: The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern and respect for others, and generally maintains a good clean lifestyle.
DEFINITION OF SERVICE REQUIREMENT
PART OF THE REQUIREMENT for acceptance into the National Honor Society is participation inservice activities. In fact, service is one of the main expectations for members of the National Honor Society.
In order to satisfy this requirement, the applicant must be able to document participation in three activities each year in addition to their academic responsibilities.
- The application for NHS will include one activity sheet for community - athletic involvement per grade which must be signed by a validating adult who has direct involvement in the activity. The sheet must support that the candidate was an active, participating member of the group, club, organization, or team.
- Membership in the Wantagh High School National Honor Society requires that the students are involved in the school. It is, however, recognized that many of our students engage in community service activities outside of the high school. While outside involvement is recognized, at least one activity each year must be as a part of a Wantagh High School club team, organization or activity.
- For those students who are involved in athletics, service may include up to two varsity sports each year. However, the third activity submitted must be in some other type of participation or service. (As the sports would satisfy the school requirement, the third activity may be from an organization outside of the school, but it must be of a service nature.)
- Paid employment does not satisfy the service requirement. Tutoring will count as a service if a student is not being paid. Additionally, one-time events such as a fund raising walk or volunteering in a soup kitchen will not count as service, unless a pattern of volunteerism is present (15 hours per year). Membership in other honor societies will not satisfy the service requirement unless an advisor certifies that the student has contributed to the organization.
Special Note: Confirmation of outside activities requires validation by an adult supervisor/coordinator of the organization. It is highly recommended that a letter on organization stationary be submitted. A phone number must be included, in the event that further validation is needed.
