    Here are some ENL terms and their descriptions to help you understand our program:
          ELL: English Language Learner
          ENL: English as a New Language
          LEP: Limited English Proficiency
          ESOL: English to Speakers of Other Languages
          NYSITELL- placement exam for all new entrants
          NYSESLAT: New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test
          L1: First or Home Language
          HLQ: Home Language Questionnaire
     
    English Language Proficiency Levels and their descriptions:
                 
     Entering (Beginning)  The student has great dependence on supports and structures to advance his or her academic language skills and has yet to meet the linguistic demands necessary to demonstrate English language proficiency in a variety of academic contexts within this grade level.
     Emerging (Intermediate) The student has some dependence on supports and structures to advance his or her academic language skills and has yet to meet the linguistic demands necessary to demonstrate English language proficiency in a variety of academic contexts within this grade level.
     Transitioning (Intermediate) The student shows some independence in advancing his or her academic language skills and has yet to meet the linguistic demands necessary to demonstrate English language proficiency in a variety of academic contexts within this grade level.
     Expanding (Advanced) The student shows great independence in advancing his or her academic language skills and has yet to meet the linguistic demands necessary to demonstrate English language proficiency in a variety of academic contexts within this grade level.
